Cefatrin:
CEFATRIN (Ceftriaxone
Sodium for injection):
CEFATRIN
(Ceftriaxone Sodium) is a semisynthetic, third
generation Cephalosporin with a long half-life which
results in once or twice daily dosage.
Composition:
Each vial contains sterile
Ceftriaxone Sodium equivalent to Ceftriaxone. Vials of
volumes 1 g, 500
mg and 250 mg are
available.
Mechanism
of Action:
Cefatrin
is bactericidal and acts by inhibition of cell wall
synthesis. It has a high degree of stability in the
presence of B lactamases (both penicillinases and
cephalosporinases) of gram + ve and gram - ve
bacteria. The basic method of action is the
interruption of the transpeptidation process that
links the individual peptidoglycan
components of the bacterial cell wall to each
other.
Indications:
- Meningitis
- Surgical prophylaxis
- Bacterial
septicaemia.
- Lower
respiratory tract infections
- Urinary
tract infections
- Pelvic
inflammatory disease
- Uncomplicated
gonorrhoea
- Skin
and skin structure infections
- Bone
and joint infections
Dosages
and Administration:
Usual
daily dose of CEFATRIN
is 1 to 2 gm (im. I
i.v.) administered once a day (or in equally
divided doses twice a day) depending on the type and
severity of the infection. The total daily dose should
not exceed 4 gm.
